What are foot orthoses?

Orthoses. Orthotics. Arch supports. Insoles. They all mean the same thing but we’ll give you all the information you need to know about them!

What are orthoses?

Orthoses are a medical-grade device used within shoes which can help in the following ways:

  1. Re-distribute pressures
  2. Help offload sore spots
  3. Improve foot function
  4. Alter alignment of the lower limb and foot
  5. Improve walking and running efficiency

What are the different types of orthoses?

Prefabricated orthoses

Pros Cons
Several options available Most options only apply pressure in the arch area
Readily available to be issued on the day of your appointment Do not fit to the feet as well as custom foot orthoses
Can be easily modified Do not fit well in all shoes (only in runners)
Cheapest option Do not last very long (up to 1 year)

Semi-custom-made orthoses

Pros Cons
Able to adjust where pressure can be applied (not only just in the arch) Do not fit to the feet as well as custom foot orthoses
Fit to the feet better than prefabricated orthoses Not readily available
Can be easily modified Top cover may need be replaced (can wear out over time)
Easier to fit in most shoe options
Last longer than prefabricated orthoses (more durable material)

Custom-made orthoses

Pros Cons
Able to choose specifically where pressure needs to be applied Not readily available
Fit to the feet perfectly Top cover may need be replaced (can wear out over time)
Can be easily modified (more so than the other options)
Easier to fit in most shoe options
Last longer than other options

How are custom orthoses made?

Our team does a thorough biomechanical assessment to determine whether orthoses will be suitable for you. Once deemed necessary, we use a 3D scanner at the clinic to take 3D images of your feet, we then send this along with your prescription to a laboratory to be made!

Check out the video below of our podiatrist Ebony showing you how we modify our orthoses:
